Idaho based luthier A. Lawrence Smart has made a name for himself over the last several decades as one of the highest quality mandolin builders out there, and mandolas like this one can be seen in the hands of players like Joe K. Walsh, John Reischman and many more.

This example, built in 2024, is an excellent example of Smart’s incredible eye for construction, with a gorgeous spruce top, great flamed back and side, and a hand rubbed varnish finish.

With a 16 5/16th scale length, 1 7/32nd’s nut width, and a nice big neck profile, as well as a larger, 11.5” body width, this mandala has more of the tone and playability of an octave mandolin. James Tailpiece and Rubner Tuners!
