Richard Hoover first made a name for himself in the world of high end acoustic guitars by being guitar tech to maybe the most famous flatpicker of all time: Tony Rice. Now 50 years later, Santa Cruz is known for their impeccable attention to detail, their amazingly vintage sounding instruments, and close relationships with musicians who play their instruments.

This 2016 PW Dread model is no different, with a great, full sound and vintage feel, thanks to its 1 ¾” nut, and slight V profile neck. The top is a custom ordered bearclaw Sitka spruce, tinted a little darker than normal, and the back and sides are Indian rosewood. The guitar itself is styled more like a D-21 than a D-28, with tortoiseshell binding as opposed to the usual white plastic.

Condition wise, this instrument has a fairly normal amount of wear for a guitar that’s 10 years old, with little dings and scratches present throughout. There are two pretty major dings on the back of the V on the neck, with you can feel with your hand, but they don’t get in the way of playing.
