2019 Martin Gruhn Special 0000-18 (Sinker Mahogany)
2019 Martin Gruhn Special 0000-18 (Sinker Mahogany)
Built to the specs of Nashville guitar sales wizard George Gruhn, this 0000 sized (or M, depending upon the era of Martin production) 12 fret to the body Martin, built by the Martin Custom Shop, is a stylistic and tonal tribute to the early 30’s Martin 12 fret guitars, but with a slightly more modern shape and playing experience.
With a dread sized body but a narrower waist, as well as a slightly thinner body depth just under 4” like a 000, this guitar has a much more punchy, forward sound than the average dreadnought, but with much of the bass response still preserved thanks to the extra room in the upper bout.
The 25.4” scale also gives this guitar a little more punch than the standard M-36, the other 0000 size Martin guitar (thought recently discontinued). The nut width is 1 13/16ths, for a little more of that early 30’s experience.
The back and sides of this guitar are Sinker mahogany, usually Mahogany that’s been recovered from lakes and rivers that take on the mineral content of their former resting places, often giving them a much more open, aged sounding ring, also due to the fact that most sinker logs are old growth trees that have sat for decades.
The top is most likely Red spruce, with nice wide grain for a deeper bass response.
In great shape, with just the normal wear (swirls, etc) from 6 years of use.
