1976 Martin D-18 Shadetop
1976 Martin D-18 Shadetop
Though the 1970’s often have a troubled reputation for Martin, they were the continuation of Martins stratospheric rise to the center of the American public eye, thanks to rock n’ roll acts of the 60’s and 70’s.
This nice old 1976 D-18 perfectly encapsulates that sound and feel, with a bright, forward, chimey tone that is just like every CSN, CCR, Eagles, or Dan Fogelberg tune you ever heard. Significantly more rare than the natural version, the shadetop (Martin’s sunburst) D-18 had a resurgence about every 20 years or so, with increased production numbers in the early 30’s, 50’ and 70’s. This one has the characteristic (and quite beautiful) light sunburst of this era, which was a much redder version than the bursts of the 30’s and 40’s, though it looks just like one of those earlier darker bursts after they’ve sat in the sun and faded nicely with age.
The neck is a nice comfortable V profile, common for this era (since the 60’s brought back the more vintage feeling neck), and is coupled with a 1 11/16th nut for a nice playable experience.
The finish on this has the textbook finish crazing that old guitars are so loved for, but otherwise this guitar is in quite good shape considering its age. There are little dings mostly on the lower half of the guitar, as well as one or two noticeable scratches on the top and back. Structurally all sound.
Comes with the original blue Martin case.
