Well folks, here’s one that you don’t see every day. This is quite possibly the only four string J-35 ever made by Gibson in their long and illustrious history - though Gibson often offered Tenor versions of their guitar lineup, there is no other evidence to point to a Tenor version of the J-35 anywhere else. Gibson collectors, line up! (A similar example of an Advanced Jumbo can be seen at Retrofret for $35,000, so this is practically a steal!)

With a spruce top, mahogany back and sides (as well as neck), and the J-35’s highly regarded bracing, which in 1938 still featured the “three bar” construction, this guitar possibly started its life intended to be a six string, but whatever its initial purpose, it hasn’t lost any sound due to the four string neck on there; if anything, its got a sound entirely to its own - deep, clear, and remarkably flexible for any tuning - (Neil tuned it down to C like a mandocello and we had to pry it out of his hands).

The bridge is the same straight bridge found on the normal J-35, obviously smaller and moved up to accommodate for the 22 ¾” scale.

In great structural shape (with just one or two glued up cracks on the back), with lots of excellent finish crazing and a lot of wear on the top that indicates a long and loved life.
